"Fake News" pt. 2

Hey folks! We’re continuing on from our last blog post with another “fake news” snippet about worship.

Fake News #2 – “Doctrine divides us, Jesus unites us.”

Bear with me here, because things might get a little dicey.

While the above statement may be true, it is an attempt to mischaracterize and minimize the importance of the truth that informs our belief.

Doctrine is defined as “a belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a Church, political party, or other group.” When we talk about church doctrine, it refers to anything we teach about a given subject.

“Good” doctrine lines up with what the Bible teaches, and “bad” doctrine does not.

Doctrine helps us with specificity – we must know God correctly to worship Him rightly. If we don’t know Him, we risk making ourselves the object of our own praise, or worse, making our PRAISE ITSELF the object of our worship.

We must be careful to know Jesus rightly in our personal and corporate worship – to define terms, give legs to our beliefs, and to make our doctrine in the important things a unifier, not a divider. We must sing the trinity, sing the sinless life of Christ, the holiness of God, and the steadfastness of the Holy Spirit.

We must sing what is true.

“Worship given to a God we aren’t willing to define ends up being a product of our own imagination, not a gift from God.” – Bob Kauflin
