Be More Like Christ - Philippians 2:12-18

The primary goal of all our Christian efforts is to grow to be more like Christ. As we strain toward this goal, there are two ruts we must avoid. The first is confusing our efforts with works that aim to earn God’s favor, rather than a loving response to the favor He has already shown us. The other is a lazy faith that overcorrects from the flaw of the first group and puts no effort into doing the things which please God. Neither of these perspectives are Biblical. The Biblical view of our efforts at greater Christlikeness is that we must gaze intently at the beauty and complexity of our great salvation and rely on the knowledge of that truth to shape our minds and hearts into the mind and heart of Christ. The three elements of our salvation that we should set our gaze upon in this passage are:

  1. A Salvation that Works: Doing the God empowered things that lead to spiritual maturity.

12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

  • Recommit to the primary spiritual disciplines of Bible reading and prayer.

  1. A Salvation that Shines: Having an attitude of gratitude even in the midst of difficulty.

14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,

  • Reflect the light of Christ by loving others well and putting their interests before your own.

  1. A Salvation that Endures: Keeping God’s Word preeminent and trusting his voice above all others.

16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.17 Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. 18 Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.

  • Resolve that, when all the voices around you are pulling you away from the Word of God, you will not let go of the only voice that offers you true and lasting life.
